Does anyone collect scrip or Local\Community currencies, such as http://www.ithacahours.org/? There are a lot of alternative currency programs and some really neat designs and I was just wondering if anyone collected them and if so, what you collect.

There are local currencies in Europe, notably Christiana in Kobenhavn, Denmark, kind of a Eutopian(sp?) hippy commune in the city which has it's own coins.

In Russia and Ukraine there have been lots of these for Kholkoz Farms and Kombinats, mostly in the late 1980's and early 1990's when there was a shortage of money etc.

The only local currency that I collect is German Notgeld and UK Tokens, not sure if they count :smile

There is a section on Canadian Tire money. That is the second national currency of Canada. There is also the Toronto Dollars.

The South African town of Orania has issued a local currency. It is called the Ora,& is tied 1:1 with the Rand.A lot of people, including some Afrikaners see Orania as an outpost of apartheid, because non-Afrikaners are not allowed to live there.Orania is in effect,South Africa's equivilant of Transdniester. If someone offered me the notes of Orania,I would want them for my British Commonwealth banknote collection.

There are also around 2 dozen local currencies in Germany. It is not yet known if a catalogue has been published for these modern issues.
