I have an advertisement for a complete uncirculated nickel set (2004-2006) for $2.95 with free shipping. It also includes the 2003 ( for free they say ). If I buy this it appears that I agree to be part of the coin of the month club, which can be returned without purchasing, so a couple of questions. 1. Has anyone bought this nickel set from Littleton? 2. Is it easy to cancel the"coin of the month" subscription? 3. If anyone has bought from them, how is the quality of their product? I did read the other posts on the forum regarding Littleton. The general feel I get is that it is more a complaint of being overpriced than of poor quality or deceptive practices. All thoughts welcome. Thanks, Troy
littleton I have gotten their cheap silver eagle before and had no problem canceling their coin of the month club. Just send the coin back (they send the first coin with your purchase) and say no thanks to the club. The quality of the ASE was fine, but I don't know about thier other coins. I would assume all the newer uncirculated coins would be fine.
My son and I have purchased a few coins from Littleton. All coins were MS60 or higher and of quality strike. However their prices are not bargains, not over priced, but, with a little searching could be purchased for less elsewhere. I suffered a debilitating stroke and my wife died. Being on Social Security, I could no longer stay on their club. Even we narrowed the line of coins down to my interests there were still some coins I received that were not in my collecting interests or I couldn't afford. It was costing me too much to return the coins not in my collecting interests. A phone call got me off the listing. Clinker.
The nickels aren't a bad deal. It's their hook to get you interested in rec'g their coin of the month nonsense. Don't do it and send the coins back immediately. They supply the envelope with postage, USE IT! There coins are extremely overpriced and the quality is mostly O.K. I only buy from them if I can't get it anywhere else. That rarely happens. P.S. There have been several posts regarding littleton experiences. Do a search and you may find it enlightening.
You guys are so picky. Littleton overpriced? Naaaa, on average for the new stuff only about 300% above the average. They have to pay for all of them fancy adds in the rag mags ya know.
Littleton offers these deals for first time buyers only, if it was me I'd wait and use that offer on something more substantial than the westward ho nickels. I'd imagine you could get those at any coin show for about the same money if not less. I bought five silver eagles from them last winter on one of those first timer deals and got three nice ones, one with a mark on it and the last had a nasty gouge out of it. In the first "coins on approval" package they tried to sell me a couple of silver eagles from, like, 2001 and 2002, for over twenty bucks each, and this was before silver really took off this spring. There was no trouble sending them back and cancelling but I was a bit disappointed. I've heard people say the quality is good but the prices are high. I looked over the catalogue they sent me and you could probably do a lot better finding a local coin shop or attending a coin show.
I got the nickels. What they give you is supposed to be MS60. The bag says MS60 on it. What they are is the culls, rejects and nicked up coins they can't pass off as high grade. MS 60 allows for bag marks, nicks and scrapes. I was not pleased with them. And they are way overpriced. They want $25 for a Silver eagle! I just sent it back with a written critical piece of my mind. They cancelled no problem.
Be careful-I signed up for Littletons club to get a discounted silver eagle. They then sent me several Fine-VF franklins for BU prices, which I promptly returned with a note to cancel my membership. Several months later they sent another batch of crappy coins (including a circulated IKE dollar) and had already billed my Master card. I had to make an angry phone call telling them to stop sending me their overpriced junk. This happened about a year ago.
Overpriced junk is right! I might have purchased some of it for half of the amount they were charging. I guess they are happy just selling to suckers.
