Not often I buy LRBs, but I really liked this coin and it actually crosses off an emperor I didn't & never owned. Thanks to JA auctions and of course, Doug. Magnus Maximus (383 - 388 A.D.) Æ13 O: D N MAG MAXIMVS P F AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: SPES ROMANORVM; Camp-gate with star between its two turrets // RT Rome Mint 387-388 A.D. 13mm 1.1g RIC IX 59.3, p. 131, rare. From the Doug Smith Collection #1507
It's always nice to cross one off the list even if you didn't know you wanted it. Nice addition. I grabbed the ex Doug, Geta only because I only had one. One is never enough.
I was tempted by this @Mat, but had my eye on another (which I didn't bid high enough on). Of course, the provenance is impeccable.
I love these. Very cool to have a Rome mint example... those couldn't have been produced for long! (It's listed as rare on Esty's site.) I just have the common Arelate mint: And Aquileia (probably) for Flavius Victor (sweet portrait, eh?):
Neat coin and provenance. MM's bronzes are tough to find. I only have a silver, way easier to get IMO Magnus Maximus, Siliqua Trier mint, 2nd officina D N MAG MAX IMVS P F AVG, draped, cuirassed and diademed bust right VIRTVS RO MASORVM (sic !!) Roma seated facing, holding globe and spear. TRPS at exergue 1.91 gr Ref : Cohen # 20 var, Roman coins # 4201 Q
I wish you folks would stop making me feel bad for selling that coin. It is always interesting to see which things you can't give away and which ones have a line of people slugging it out. In some cases, I probably forgot what I found interesting about a coin that caused me to want it once but not still. I know I have too many coins. A less than enjoyable part of the hobby is what I call buyer's remorse. Seller's remorse exists, too. I wonder if I have ever had both on the same coin.
