My uncle races horses. He recently had me hunt down a nice US stone mountain commemorative because he likes horses. Now health issues have likely ended his involvement in the sport. I would like to find him a nice Horse related coin...but I'd like to keep it under $100. Slabbed is preferred or an expert approval since I am not a world coin expert. Any thoughts? A nice design and appeal would be a priority over condition. Thank you. :)

One of our members, Brandon @brg5658 has an NGC Registry Set of wonderful coins & medals whose theme is horses. If you have the time, why don't you browse through it for some ideas, or maybe Brandon will be able to give you some ideas.

I don't have the name of his set right at the moment, so I've tagged Brandon for you.

Thanks for the lead. I've seen him on the NGC forums quite a bit, not sure why he didn't come to mind.

Fitting design, considering the theme. Thanks for the lead.

Hi @Kapimono , if you're interested in browsing my set, you can find it at this link.

For < $100 you should have lots of options for horse-related coins.

The 1961 Italy coin is a great suggestion given above. Another I really like are the 20, 50, and 100 Franc coins from Luxembourg in 1946. The year 2002 and 2014 were the most recent years where the horse was the Chinese Zodiac animal of the year, so you will also find a LOT of coins for those years.

Chris (@cpm9ball ), thanks for tagging me! It's nice to be though of. :D

here ya go Ebay's $1-100 horse coins. countries with horse coins I am familiar with are Mexico, Italy, Ireland, Germany, Turkey and Great Britain,... gold sovereign coins have a horse on them but are way more than $100 bucks($375-400)

    Ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-World...=1&_udhi=100&_nkw=horse&_pgn=3&_skc=400&rt=nc

I think the best horse coins come from Mexico, Ireland, Italy and Germany. your call.

I'm curious what kind of horses your uncle races? My family races harness horses, which are less common than thoroughbreds.

I had originally thought about an ancient...he's of Greek descent. I just don't know enough about them to ensure it's a legit coin. I appreciate the outside thinking, lots to think about.

That's a good question, I've never really asked him. Is that sad? I'll find out for you.

=> all of those examples I posted are from "vcoins" which guarantees authenticity and the dealers all stand behind a lifetime guarantee to refund the coin-cash if the coin is determined to be a fake (ummm, that's why you pay a bit more for that vcoins' peace-of-mind, rather than gambling on e-bay) ...... but I understand (people find it difficult to grasp that ancient coins are often "way cheaper" than main-stream more modern coin-targets)

=> good luck and your hunt (oh, and it's a great idea ... I'm sure that he's gonna love whatever you get him)

The Mexican "Caballito" Peso of 1910-1914 comes to mind.

Look on eBay. The Australian mint makes a one ounce silver bullion coins with a stock horse on the reverse. The 2016 isn't so hot but some of the earlier years are spectacular. It will make a nice gift and is within your price range. Much nicer than the stone mountain commemorative. Good Luck!
