After most of my life going by without paying any attention, I have finally begun the project of organizing and listing the pile of coins in my dresser. Here is a partial list so far, I would love to know if any of these jump out at anybody as possibly being worth something? Thank you kindly! You've got quite a hoard there, some interesting issues and dates. With condition of the coins someone should be able to give you an idea of value. Pictures are the best, they would allow judging as to condition when setting a value. Posting pics is easy, here is a how to thread: http://www.cointalk.com/t8565/ I would also recommend the book "A guide book of United Stated Coins" by RS Yeoman. The 2010 edition is out, one caution, the pricing noted is not gospel. Actual sale prices vary wildly. But there is a wealth of information about the coins you have. and Welcome to CoinTalk
With my collecting interest limited to copper, cents and two cents, I'm gonna go with the early Indian Head Cents, the 1863 and 1863. Both were minted during the Civil War. The 1937D Buffalo nickel is also interesting, you need to check to see if that Bison has 3 or 4 legs. If it is three then you really have something on your hands.
Hey, thank you! The buffalo has 4 legs and the 1863 indian head penny is actually the best one of the lot condition wise, I dont know how to rate coins but it looks very detailed to me......thanks again!
Condition is everything. Nothing really jumps out at me, with the exception of the 1878-CC morgan, which could be worth some money. Some of what you've listed is worth only face value. Some of what you've listed is common-date silver coinage, and if in common circulated condition will bring a multiple of face value, currently about 11 times.
I've seen a blue (with b&w pages) and red (with color pages) version at the bookseller, which one or both to get? what's the difference other than the color? Also, they don't go above 65 rated coins, is there a source for 66+, either on line or on paper? thanks
K6UA -- you'll want the Redbook. Don't buy it for the prices, though, as you will be sorely disappointed. Buy it as a learning tool, and read it thoroughly. The blue book is also a price guide; supposed to be dealer buy prices, but it too is flawed. Also, if you're new enough to be asking about whether you should buy the Redbook or Bluebook, I wouldn't worry too much about MS-66 and higher grades or prices. Learn what you're doing first before messing with this kind of material. There are lots of pitfalls, from overgrading, to overzealous low-tier TPGs, to buying common modern junk. On a more positive note, yes, there are all manner of price guides on the internet, for all grades and types of coins. There are also grading guides, and tons of informative articles and stories that you should read before spending too much. And, of course, CoinTalk is a fantastic resource.
Or, you know, you could send it to me for "evaluation". I swear I'll give it back all nice and "evaluated"
