The U.S. Mint will release this in Feb. 12, 2009; what's the best way to buy a couple?

Absolutely. Buy them straight from the Mint if you can.

Up to a mintage of 500,000. Is this a high mintage relating to commemorative coins? Is the proof and Uncirc mintage both 500,000?

500,000 total between proof and unc. Guess a 50/50 split. Plan on getting 5 each of both and selling a few and keeping the rest to enjoy.

that is one nice looking coin. I hope the design translates well to the coin. I don't usually like new commemoratives but this one I am considering buying.

You can't go wrong with old honest Abe. I think this coin will be bought up quick with the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent also.

Only if they sell out. I think the top has been 500,000 for the last few commem dollars.

So when can you place an order, Feb. 12th?

Or is that just a release date and orders will be taken before than?

Feb. 12th, Lincoln's birthday, is listed in the Mint's product schedule as the availablity date. That should be the first day that you may order this commemorative. Whether they will be available to ship immediately is a question I hope the Mint, in its wisdom, has considered logically connected to "availablity."

I want to see it struck first. If the design is as shallow as the last few commems I may just purchase a few UNCs for turn around sales and use the profits to get myself a nice 1918 Illinois Commem.

I very much doubt they will have a hard time selling out. Come on, it's Abe Lincoln! I'll be on the mint's website like the rest of you on Feb 12th.
