hello all a while back i posted about my lincoln set i just thought i'd give an update i need 18 more to have a complete 1909-present set 1909s vdb 1909s 1910s 1911s 1912s 1913s 1914d 1914s 1915s 1917s 1922 plain lol 1923s 1924d 1924s 1926s 1928s 1931d 1931s 1932 so my question to all of you out there is: i dont have the biggest coin budget so would it be better to get some of the semi keys in lower grades that i can afford or just save up for the good grades? sorry for the long post thanks for reading!
I would get the highest grades you can afford for the semi keys and keys. The 1909 S VDB, 1909 S, 1914 D and 1931 S will be the hardest. The others will be pretty cheap.
Let's see.....do you think you would have an extra $10/week?? If you do here is what I would sugget. Take $10 every week and go and get a roll of quarters from your bank. Get a box and just start putting the rolls in there. If at the end of the week you see...heck I have another $10-$20+ left....put that into rolls as well. In a short time you should have enought to get one or two of the key dates. I think you could get a 1931-S and 1909-S for around $125 each...maybe alittle more or less... That is what I did....but at the time I didn't know it ...when I went to buy my 1909-S VDB I found that I had saved enough in quarters to pay for it all and some left over! Speedy
You need to get that 09 s vdb pretty quick, I think it'll be a $1000 coin in good here in the next year or so.
No matter what you do, try not to be tempted to buy a discounted coin with damage or cleaning, etc.....you will forever regret it. Problems that you buy are bigger problems when you go to upgrade , you'll get ripped on trade value or sell price. Good luck, sounds like a nice set !!
Are you aiming to have the set in the same basic grade, buying what you can afford, buying what you like, or just filling holes? I myself am intolerant of holes in my set so I fill first and upgrade later. Even the lower grade Lincoln fillers seem to be selling well lately.
speedy: thanks i think i can do that AJ: good advice thanks andycook: i'm just trying to fill holes i just want a complete set, after that i can upgrade
"i dont have the biggest coin budget so would it be better to get some of the semi keys in lower grades that i can afford or just save up for the good grades?" Nobody can answer that question other than you. That said, I find matched sets to be far more attractive than sets with some BU coins and other circulated. But in the end it is what YOU want that really matters. Respectfully...Mike
Yes, Well matched sets, grade and color wise are the cats meow, in any state of preservation. A nice original problem free G/VG set is an accomplishment, and those that can afford it, XF/AU sets are the most popular grade to collect. Then there are the Stewart Blay type sets we can only dream about. One day, I will load pics of my AU BN set. It is now fully complete sans the 22 No D but resides in a bank box, not my house, so getting pics will take some time and effort. Rlm has a darn near complete set in BU, quite an accomplishment, and with any luck, we can complete it in Long Beach.
If you are looking for a nice set, you are correct. If you are looking for an uncirculated set, I assure you the 22- will be much more difficult - with either reverse.
Yes, I mean it. However, before you give me those names, you had better give me the manes of someone who can spot (give) me the money.
yes for me the matched set would be great right now i have circulated and a few BU examples i picked up for .50 at the store near me only problem is affording the keys and semi's much less au-bu examples lol but great insight guys thanks alot
Hello wheatman. I began collecting wheats as a child, and just recently completed my set(minus the 22 plain). I agree that a well matched set looks better. What I did was make an excel spreadsheet of all my Lincolns, my opinion of the grade, and then highlight certain year/mintmarks of the ones I feel I should eventually upgrade. The grades I have range from VG to BU, so it is currently quite unmatched. All my VG coins are marked in red on the excel sheet(immediately upgrade), where as my Fines are in yellow(eventually upgrade). All the ones VF or better are in green, as my goal is eventually to have the entire wheat set in VF or better. All this to say, I think you should determine what grade you are going for in your set, and then be consistent with your upgrades and additions to match the set. Also, I agree with the fact that you shouldnt compromise to get a coin with a problem. Wait for a problem free coin.
