It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve had an ongoing thread on anything, so Jim Beam and I decided to just post all the Lincoln cents from 1960-69. We have a few small/large dates, some Special Mint Sets, and a re-engraving at the end of the decade. Every decade has some points of interest, so I have picked this one pretty much at random.

If it helps, this is the decade when I started collecting, so there may be a bit of nostalgia thrown in.

For today, let’s start at the beginning. I will try to post a new cent each day until I run out. Please feel free to post what you have for the same date/mintmark/variety.

But, dang, some of these are just stunning, and they remind me of why I like this series. It’s not like every coin is the same - the sameness is just a platform for appreciating the subtle differences between each coin. I’m excited!!

The master dies were recut way back in 1916. Business strikes from that year show detail that was not seen again for half a century as the master dies got smoother and smoother. We see this 1916 has beard details that are only a memory by the 1960’s. On the other hand, the Lincoln Memorial reverse only started in 1959, so the master die is still fresh and detail is still strong.

    I am slightly in disbelief. I can't find a photo of a 60' Lincoln.

The 1960-P Small Date is the only one I never found while
CRHing in the 1976-84 time frame. My favorites were the
    S mints.

During the 1960’s these small date 1960’s were touted as rare, collectible, and valuable. Since I was collecting in the mid-60’s as a teen, my mother picked up on their supposed value and started saving every one she found. Fifty years later, she decided it was time to divide up her coin hoard between my two sisters and me. My share amounted to a large cardboard box that I could barely lift.

It turned out that I sold rolls of these for barely more than they were worth 50 years earlier. I only have this one left.

Ok, I will put this one up., 1960 DDO, Sm date over Large date , D/D RPM. The rumor ( as no one to my knowledge knows how many were minted into the flow before they were noticed and shutdown to change dies. At first they were thought to be faked or done on purpose. Price ( around $400) has stayed fairly stable since the late 60s, but none similar have shown up. Jim

I have been looking thru files trying to find some early 60's Cents. All that I can find are a few RPM's.
