Ok have a couple of questions regarding telling the difference on Lincoln Cents. How can you tell a Matte Proof from a business strike? Also how can you tell the difference in a SMS versus a proof? And last a (1936-1942) (1950-1959) proof versus business strike? I know that in higher grades this would be easier to tell with the finish of the coin. But this is an area I would really like to hear others input on. Have read various books and online sources but I am always eager to learn. Thanks. Dusty
Matte proof - they all have square rims and strikes dead solid. When in doubt (or just to confirm) there are certain die markers for each date. Not sure which SMS coins you are referring to 2005 - 2010 have a different finish. Those of 65 - 67 have no proof from those dates. Proof from 36 on have a finish that makes them obviously not your normal business strike with only the cleanest and best business strikes approaching the proof quality.
