GOOD EVENING, CALL ME CRAZY BUT I REALLY FEEL I MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING HERE. TO ME THIS COIN MATCHES SO MANY OF THE PICTURES ON VARIETY VISTA FOR THE FS-105? DID I FIND IT? THANKS IN ADVANCE, TWYZM
What's interesting is that this looks to be an early 1972 coin, prior to the master die doubling. No doubling...not even master die doubling.
Yes, the original Master Die failed and a second was made that had the doubling; that was passed on to the working hubs and working dies. So this appears to be from working dies made from the original. It almost has to be so as there is no other explanation for the lack of doubling. I remember how excited I got when I first ran across one, had to be circa Jan 2018 or so. My routine for processing coins for varieties led me to that first listing for 1972 Philly at Wexler. I’ve kept a few AU58s that show the doubling clearly to show people when the subject arises…imo…Spark
Thanks for that @Spark1951 ! I was shooting from the hip and couldn't remember if I had my thoughts correct. I almost didn't hit Post Reply. I know what you mean: I remember finding the early 1972's when I was CRHing and thinking that specimens like these weren't too frequent, especially in high grades. I still look for those early specimens in my change.
Thank you all for looking and helping but I'm confused. So this isn't a DDO but something wrong with the original die?
There are a number of varieties of doubling for this date. Yours isn’t one of them as CT it appears to be Mechanical Doubling.
I’ll try to ease your confusion. We think your coin was made from the original Master Die for 1972. This die had no doubling. But it failed during production of working hubs and working dies so the Mint had to create a second Master Die. This die did have doubling and so did all the production dies it was used to make. So from around May 1972 to the end of the year, all the rest of the coins made had doubling, making it a very common and easy to obtain variety that holds no premium. Your coin has no doubling. Ipso facto, it had to have been made from a die produced by the original Master Die before the failure. Go to Wexler and study the die making process section…imo…Spark Edited to add: Go to Wexler, to the doubled die listings for 1972 LMC and read the beginning paragraph. It has a detailed explanation on what happened… @Twyzm
