I was at my local borders the other day. I saw the red leatherbound limited edition red book for $70. It was #307 of 3000. Is this a wise investment or just stick with the soft covered book for 14 bucks?

If you collect red books as I do then the limited edition would make a nice addition to your collection, however, if you're just using the red book as a reference guide then its good to purchase the soft cover edition. I have a few limited edition leather bound red books that I havent even opened yet and probably never will. If they increase in value thats great, if not, its just as well to me. I just like to have them.

I collect Guide Books, and if you ever plan on collecting them, then you have to have this edition.
It is the same as the regular, and the list price is $70, and it is listed as sold out by Whitman's.
The special leathers started with the 2005, and they are planning on issuing the 2008 (so the set, to date, will be #4 years).
Also, they must be popular, because I heard that the printing is increasing to #3500.
    So, my opinion, get it.
Also, see if they have the limited reprint of the 1947 edition, two versions, one leather, #500 pieces @ $49.95, and the regular reprint @ $17.95 (I think).
    Both great copies.
    Good luck.

Not a good investment unless you know someone that wants one in the future. I collect the Red Book but only the hard covered ones. If you just want one to use go to the Walmart web site. Last time I looked the paperback was $9.37, Spiral ringed was $9.14, Hardcover was $10.36. I usually get about 10 of the Ringed ones for presents and one hard cover for my collection. Anything more expensive than that is a just to much for the average person.

He is referring to the special leather editions that are printed each year, since 2005 edition, with a max of #3,000 pieces.
The earlier years are already worth a premium over list, not much, but still, they are going up.
Other limited editions have also done very nicely.
