Regretfully, I noticed what looks like a potential problem circumstance with this coin? Unfortunately I noticed it just as the auction was ending too. For whatever reason a lot of these Liberty Seated Dollars were used as jewelry pieces, which is a shame for us collectors. I'm thinking an expert plugging job might have occurred on this one and due to the lighting it is particularly hard to notice as the brightness helps it to blend in. I am circling the area(s) of concern in photographs 2 & 4. Tell me if you think you agree or if it is my imagination or paranoia kicking into gear. If I am correct, this is the third bad coin I've purchased from this seller on EBay. I should have avoided him like the plague and retracted my bid once I saw the user name. Too late now. Seller seems to not let on about any flaws about the coins put up for sale. Seller claims the coin is a 1859 "O" piece. Would love a nice lowball for the price it went for. Auction finished at $99.95 + Free Shipping.
Well, the neck is certainly altered in some way to me. I would lean towards plugged myself, but it's hard to say without better pictures or seeing it in hand.
No I have not. Might you know where I may access this information? I'd appreciate it. Again I'd love a lowball Liberty Seated Dollar in my collection that is not a problem specimen. Today I purchased an Eisenhower Dollar that appears to be in Poor Condition for a great price. Can't wait to see how it looks when I get it. Hopefully I will be able to make out a date and get it in a PO01 slab.
Here's a great link that may help . http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index.php/seated-half-dollars-year-mintmark-major-variety-analysis/
Indeed as I didn't notice it the first time around. I'm less familiar with these but now I will know what to do.
Looks like it was plugged to me but I'm thinking it's an odd spot to put a hole to hang it. Maybe put there to sew it into a piece of clothing?
