My street in my subdivision is not a dead-end, but it really goes nowhere with not that many houses on it. There are probably 25 or so houses on it, and I know all my neighbors quite well. I'm the only person on my street that collects coins living on the street. Anyway, I was outside talking to one of my neighbors and I saw my son running to the house (to me) as fast as he could go. He found laying on the street an 1890 Liberty Nickel. The reverse is worn much more than the obverse. The "V" and almost all other devices on the reverse are almost gone. The obverse date and Miss Liberty are probably a low Fine. Of course he thought he was going to be rich, and I did stay a little vague on the value (he is ten years old, my younger of two sons). The coin is now in his special hiding place along with three or four old wheat cents. To me it is not so much him finding the coin as is the coin being there in the first place. I'm thinking about getting him another Liberty Nickel in better condition, he can add it to his collection located in his special hiding place.
Cool find. Have him show you exactly where he found it, as you never know if there may be more old coins there. May be worth using a metal detector. I like your idea of the upgrade. TC
That reminds me of when I was 8 or 9 years, not far from the house was an old dump that was seldom used anymore. We were picking thru it and rolled an old chair over on its side, as it rolled we heard the sound of coins clinging together. We managed to cut the cloth on the chair and found quite a bit of change, including a 1939 half dollar. I ran home and gave it to my dad and he gave me 2 quarters for it. Well, I now have most of my dads collection, nothing spectacular, but that 1939 half...
That is why I wanted to get him one worth collecting, with the two he would always remember it. I will always remember him running down the street.
