Hi everybody, first post on this forum, and a question. I have a Liberty Head $20 and I was thinking of sending it to PCGS. I have no idea if it's worth it. Any ideas what the grade of this coin could be ?
Wait for an expert, but just the color, flatness and look of that first picture made me think a fake. I am not an expert so wait for one of them - it could just be the picture. To me this coin would be worth it if it is real - just so when you go to sell it the buyer knows what they are getting. Just my humble opinion.
The coin is real, IMO. First photo makes it look weird. The coin appears to be mint state, but I'd like to see a photo of the obverse taken in the same fashion as the photo of the reverse.
I personally think the coin is fake. The obverse look throws me off, by it being flat which Mark Mentioned. But I could be wrong.
I'll wager it is a scan or something odd was done with the lighting (extremely diffused). Either that, or you're right and I'm wrong.
Here is one more. We (with some experts from local coins auction house) have checked coins diameter, thicknes and weight. All almoust perfect (weigt 1,2 grams less than stated in catalogue 33,4 grams)
Does it pass the ring test? Doesn't look like a cast, and light weight doesn't spell well (shouldn't be 1+ grams off), and it would be an easy test to do (just be CAREFUL). The luster looks "off" but that could be the photo (which is why I asked for another shot of it). But the thing that really bothers me is that the details of the coin appear "mushy" -- which is very common for counterfeits. BUt again, that could be because of an unnatural wear (or perhaps an old cleaning), or even the photo.
That is close, but I believe that much difference in weight would put it outside of mint specifications, especially since there appears to be little to no wear on the coin. The pictures make the coin look unnaturally smooth/clean. Try to get one with the light at an angle if you can. thanks, John
