I was wondering if you guys knew anything about the Liberian $20 Silver coins featuring US Presidents. I made a post in another thread about Harry Truman and was looking for a coin featuring that particular President, when I stumbled across this:

I havent been able to find much information on this coin and it seems that Liberia is a pretty interesting Nation in relation to the United States and our entwined histories. Anyway, as I was searching for a nice specimen for Truman, I found I liked this coin the most and it seemed to be an actual coin instead of just an art round. The striking looks well done and it seems proof like to me, but I was trying to locate mintages on these things and had no luck. Anybody know any more about these coins? Specifically how many were made?

You could also get this one, a $5 "coin" issued ten years later:

Are those things coins? Well. ;) Liberia is one of those countries that will issue pretty much any piece that a major coin dealer/distributor would like to have issued. The pieces are then sold to collectors. But if you like a theme and/or design, sure, why not buy it?

I don't want the $5 coins, at best they are junk. No face value and no precious metal content. The $20 coins at least contain 2/3 of an ounce of silver, which is kind of how I base most of my collection. I try to only buy coins that have a fall back value based around metal content. For instance I don't collect high end clad Kennedy's or Roosevelt's, etc, but I will collect any of those pre 65 or any with partial silver if I like the coin.

Anyway, this Liberian coin fit 2 of my collecting themes.

1 - it is a coin featuring a brother of my fraternity

2 - it also features a ship which falls under my nautically themed coins.

So this coin was a no brainer for me, I'm not looking to get rich off of it or anything. I am curious as to how many may have been made though.

The mintage on most of those coins are 20,000. I have collected several of them and have the certificates.
