Saw this ad on Instagram. Thought it was pretty cool - using electromagnets. Then, as I read further, the coin is a "tribute" coin, 3" in diameter. I guess they can't use a real coin (duh!). It would be so much cooler if you can put your own coin in there in suspension.

That's awesome.. as for the coin 99% likely it is silver plated bismuth which will float/levitate like that between 2 magnets :D (sorry stupid magnet trivia... i have a thing about magnets lol)

Good to know. I thought the "coin" had to be magnetized as well to levitate like that. Shows you how much I know. It is pretty cool looking though huh? Nice discussion piece.

Is Bismuth heavy? Otherwise, it'll feel a bit cheap when you hold the "coin." I guess it can't have too much heft in order to float?

could be the coin is the magnet or the bismuth.. the effect can be done either way :D (magnet between bismuth nodes) and yes heavy.. lead heavy..

Oh and on a weird side note... once the temp in the "room" is higher then 90F it won't float no more (higher temp reduces the magnetic fields)

    Back to the "original" comment...
I know I could build a frame around a smaller airtight that could do this... but could i do it with a slab with a very minimal slip on/around frame of bismuth... damn damn gotta do the math lol...

figuring 1.5oz for coin and slab, I would have to make the frame magnetic (answering the question about the display above, the magnets are in the coin the frame ends contain the bismuth.) so yes it could be done but we are talking rare earth 25lb lift magnets (at least 4)... still possible but not safe around kids or cats... those are magnets strong enough to hurt/pinch a lil paw or finger badly...

I lied.. It can be done with 2 24lb n42s but you might not get as much "hight" but it would clearly be floating.. Arrrrggggghhh you don't know what you've done!!!!!.... Magnets ordered... I should have enough bismuth on hand lol.... (btw most new fishing weights are made of bismuth now instead of lead so easy to get) Screenshot_3.png

How are you going to apply the Bismuth to the capsule or slab? Very excited for you.

bismuth will be on the "stand" the magnets will be on a minimal frame the slab will pop into (still deciding how Im doing this exactly but a "snap-in" album page will probably provide 90% of the frame) the magnets will be mounted on the top and bottom of the slab holder/frame

Can't wait to see it. Good luck with the project! :)
