I buy cleaning coin bath. I wonder after bath do I need also to wash with olive oil? Or better leave coin after bath and put in quadrum intercept?

I am not familiar with a "cleaning coin bath". Please describe it or include a photograph (which speaks more than 1,000 words).

Never seen it before, but from the description on line it may be OK. I think I would try on something inexpensive first.

I would not use olive oil as it has a tendency to darken the coin. I would use distilled water. Also make sure the coin is good and dry before putting it away.

Hold on people. That may be undiluted dip in those jars.

Bojan, Please post a photograph of the coin(s) you believe may need cleaning & the folks here might be able to suggest some cleaning methods.

My reply was a comment on what Collect89 wrote ("That may be undiluted dip in those jars"), not to your initial post. But no, I don't think olive oil in addition to such a bath makes much sense. Have not tried those Leuchtturm products though, so I cannot comment from experience.

I have a jar of the Leuchtturm bath for silver. It is dip. All their bath products state that they provide "instant and gentle removal of oxidation on coins". It sure sounds like dip to me. They also RECOMMEND a coin polishing cloth on the same pages.

This bath it's say is for all coin.Description says "All Type of coin" I was think just a little wash him before I get coin in storage. And after that nobady will touch him again. I was think this is only for frosting, conservation. Coin is already clean.

I have enjoyed reading a couple of your past threads today. I did not remember seeing your ancient coin threads until today. It must be great fun to find the nice ancient coins that you have recently posted!!!!

One coin that I just viewed in your past thread has a very nice original patina. I would not recommend putting any chemical "bath" on it. I suspect that the unknown "bath" could really (really really) damage the patina. An improper cleaning can quickly damage an ancient coin & make it practically worthless to an ancient coin collector. An improper cleaning cannot be un-done.

Please post a photo of any coin you think might need cleaning in this thread BEFORE you give the coin a bath.

I think that most experts in ancient coin cleaning begin with very long soaks in known liquids. They soak coins for weeks and months (and even years I think). Alternately, you can perform a harsh chemical or abrasive cleaning technique & ruin the coin quickly.

I was going to tell you about a chemical cleaner called Tarn-X. I believe the manufacturer stated that it was for cleaning all types of coins. It removed the oxidation & ruined many (MANY) coins that it touched. Also, you do not want to store coins with any unknown chemical residue on them because the coins may develop problems after long term exposure/storage.

Edit to add: There is a huge difference between cleaning/conserving modern uncirculated coins and cleaning/conserving an ancient coin. You really need to post the particular coin for everyone's comments.

Leuchtturm is a well-known brand in Germany. I think their products are all good, people just don't know how to use them properly...

I think people seem to forget there is also dry cleaning which can also be effective. I know nothing about this product but would think twice about using it. Every coin should be analyzed first before even thinking about cleaning it.
