According to this article https://www.coinsweekly.com/en/News/Leu-Numismatik-AG-Robbed-on-Christmas-Eve/4?&id=5819 526 lots of ancient coins from Leu auction 6 (closed Dec. 9, 2018) not yet sent out to buyers were stolen Christmas eve. They have pictures of them all here: https://leunumismatik.com/9382hf3wj98fcwq0u721sdcc I hope they had very good insurance. I wonder if any were sold to our CT forum members?
I got three lots in that sale, but luckily they were delivered on 22nd December. Hopefully, with the pictures of the stolen lots, they will be identified when they turn up again and the burglars caught. ATB, Aidan.
I won one lot and it is not on the list of stolen coins. I am relieved but I feel bad for Leu and for the customers who bid and will not get their coins. I am going to scour the auction site for the next week to see if any turn up. I hope these thieves get caught soon.
Oh, wow, it’s saddening to hear that so many coins were stolen. I hope the thieves are caught and the coins recovered. I see some coins I had bid on in the list of those stolen, but thankfully, the ones I did win were sent out on Dec 19.
That is so sad! Thanks for the link. I wonder why that many coins hadn't yet been shipped? Perhaps the winning bidder(s) didn't pay immediately? The auction closed on December 9th and the coins were stolen December 24th.
Wow thats horrible, I hope everything is insuranced and the photos are spreaded all over the web to make it difficult for those robbers to ever sell them. This is so bad, some amazing coins between them, I hope they catch those robbers as well. Thank god @Orfew our coins were sent at the same time before this robbing occured.
Yikes that's cray cray- someone's head is going to roll on that one. How could they let hundreds of coins go unsecured. I know nothing on how these auction houses work so I wouldn't know the leaky weaky areas. My two Leu coins arrived in the post today!
Terrible news. Got my 4 coins from Leu6 yesterday. It took about a week for them to ship my coins after I had paid. So, i’m counting my blessing with the Leu win. Now, there’s a US action house that mailed me a registered package. It has been missing for a week, usps said they don’t know where it is
I bid on one of the stolen coins. I was not the high bidder. I have a good memory for lots I am interested in. If I see that lot next month at the New York International I will recognize it. What kind of buyer wants coins that people will recognize as stolen decades later? It might take a few days for invoices to be prepared. Leu invoices are marked that they must be paid in 10 days. Non-Paypal methods, such as bank drafts, take a few days. It would be easy for a payment made a week after the auction to arrive during a Christmas break when the shipping department is closed.
with so many here(ancient coin collectors), these stolen coins are literally worthless on an open market..
That is terrible news, I hope that company can survive this. I like doing business with them. They are one of the most proffesional auction houses.
Sadly, these kind of robberies happens more often than we think. http://www.numismaticcrimes.org/?q=reports
I am actually wondering, does their office not have any alarm system or protection or anything? I mean, there are half a million Swiss francs worth of coins in there.
I’m very optimistic that these nitwits will get busted trying to sell them, and hopefully all or most can be recovered.
There wasn't much gold. The "526 lots" description obscures the fact that some of the missing lots were group lots. Just four of the lots totaled 300+ lead seals, mostly Byzantine. I recommend anyone who who runs a table at an ancient coin show look closely at the stolen group lots.
