    Found this the other day.

It appears that the letters are stamped over mark. How does that occur in the process of minting? The mark continues around the coin. Q664-2.jpg

    Thanks

Coin roll crimping machines can leave a mark like that.

Would that scuff the lettering as well?

If you look at your own pictures, you can see scuffing
    Look at the (top part of pic, but lower part of H, D, A, K, H, O, T ...

the letters are also incused in the coin so it will look like they did not get touched .. the scratch is only touching the higher part of the metal not the incused part of the lettering so it will kinda look like the scratch is going under the lettering

Looks like the other guys forgot that those are incused lettering.

Got it, that was a great way to put. The incused (lower portions) aren't touched. Thanks for putting up with the questions. I'm learning a lot....mainly how not to get ripped off. There is a lot information out there on error coins, a lot of it is miss leading.

Found a good video on how coins are placed in the ballistic bags. That shows just how coins are packaged....lots of room for PMD. This one is for pennies but I can imagine how the sharp edges of reeded coins can impact on each other.
