I know I have told this story before..... I am a US collector that happened by an ancient dealers table at a show. This portrait of Jesus just mesmerized me. I have purchased quite a number of folles since, but none match the portrait on this one. I just absolutely love this coin.
OK, Where do I start... Nice class G by the way @Yorkshire ! These are my best ones, have a couple more but not as good. There are CoinTalkers that could fill pages with Jesus coins!
Ok, just joking. Here's one. Time of Basil II/Constantine VIII 976-1025 A.D. Byzantine Class 2 anonymous AE follis
Constantine X Ducas, 1059-1067. He was the founder and first ruling member of the short-lived Doukid dynasty. During his reign, the Normans took over much of the remaining Byzantine territories in Italy while in the Balkans the Hungarians occupied Belgrade. He also suffered defeats by the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan. Somewhat unhealthy throughout his reign, he died in 1067 at the age of 61. AV Histamenon Nomisma. I think the first depiction of Jesus on a coin is on a Solidus of Marcian, which shows Jesus standing between Marcian and Pulcheria. The coin marks the marriage between Marcian and Pulcheria.
ER Eastern Roman Empire Andronicus II and Michael IX CE 1295-1320. AR Basilikon, 22mm, 2.1g, 6h; Mint of Constantinople. Obv.: IC XC KVREI BOHΘH, Jesus Christ enthroned, right hand raised in benediction, large dot either side. Rev: ΑVΤΩΚΡΑΤΟ - PΕC PWΜΑION; Andronicus standing left and Michael standing right; holding between them a labarum. Comments: Andronikos was acclaimed co-emperor in 1261, after his father Michael VIII recovered Constantinople from the Latin Empire, but he wasn't crowned until 1272. Sole emperor from 1282, Andronikos II immediately repudiated his father's unpopular Church union with the Papacy, which he had been forced to support while his father was still alive, but he was unable to resolve the related schism within the Orthodox clergy until 1310. I won a new one just a couple of days ago, 18+ g on a nice big 33mm flan, kind of like one of the ones @Andres2 showed: Plus I don't think any Jesus portrait thread is complete without Stevex6's Zombie Jesus: Nicephorus II (963-969) w/ Basil II fourrée solidus. (Speaking of which, nice mezzanino nuovo, @tibor!)
@Severus Alexander Thanks for the compliment. I intend to get an "enthroned" one as well. @Tejas Do you have a reference number for the "Marcian and Pulcheria" coin? @NewStyleKing Do you have a reference number for the "Helios Athens" coin?
Here is a link to the coin with the earliest depiction of Jesus on a coin. It is the marriage solidus of Marcian and Pulcheria, minted in AD 450. The coin is apparently unique: The Image of Jesus on Ancient Coins (coinweek.com)
