Hey, if the price is right I'm with you. By on sale did you mean below spot? If so, can you PM me your source? I'll flip some shiny to buy some shiny all day long.
I buy all the Onsale silver and gold I can find but ebay if u follow MCM and Apmex you"ll find some close to spot numbers.
I had planned to have it reslabbed by pcgs and still may but this is my 1st CAC Morgan. I like the registry set pcgs has but I think 66 maybe a strong grade on this. Has a couple more contact marks then I would like to see in an MS66.
@throwbackid I would not have anything done to MS 66 Ngc has the bean and sent in to Pcgs may change the grade . But that's my two cents
I like the war nickel because it has a story behind it, like the steel penny and the eagle on the back of the Franklin half.
I like war nickels too, but I LOVE the proof war nickels even more. They are a relatively low mintage coin of only about ~25,000 and I think undervalued at around $80-$120 for a nice specimen. There is no need to seek out a PF-67 or higher, or anything like that, you can find some fabulous coins in the PF-63 to PF-66 range with some nice color and still stay under $150. In fact I paid just at $100 for mine, and no more than $120 (i want to say it was high $90s), and that was only about 2 years ago. Here is the numismedia listing for the Proof War Nickel: http://www.numismedia.com/cgi-bin/c...&nmcode=12210700&guide=prices&guide2=pricesms Here it is: Mine for the most part has nice smooth surfaces, alot of these you will find with hazy surfaces or ugly toning. So to find an eye appealing specimen and still stay around the $100-$150 mark is I think a steal. As a comparison, the 1997 Satin SMS Nickel of a 25,000 mintage sells for as much money, if not more. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40|R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=1997 nickel sp&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc Here is the numismedia listing for the 1997 SMS (disregard any numbers under SP-65, as most of those coins will be undesirable and harder to find anyway): http://www.numismedia.com/cgi-bin/c...&nmcode=12124200&guide=prices&guide2=pricesms The thing with the 1997's are that literally ALL of them have survived out of that 25,000 in grades of 68, 69, & 70 for the most part, with little time for attrition to kick in. The proof war nickels had a mintage of 27,600 and over 70 years of potential mishandling and neglect. So, I always buy these when I see them, its just a fun coin to have, and must for any type set. Be picky though, and patient, no sense in wasting money on subpar coins when you can still find good deals.
I have wanted one of these types for awhile. Late in January one surfaced that screamed at me. I liked how both of the main figures were well centered, usually one or the other is missing some portion. Samanta Deva” (800 - 1000 A.D.)
