1868 shield ll-1.jpg 1868 shield ll-2.jpg 1868 shield lll-1.jpg 1868 shield lll-2.jpg 1868 shield Nickle-1.jpg I picked up this 1868 Shield Nickel up a few months back. I love shields as well as all 5 cent coins...but shields offer so much going on Varieties are unreal in shield Nickels. They only were minted between 1866 -1883 now in 1883 and again in 1938 the 5 cent coin had two issues. the 1883 shield and liberty nickels were minted ...as well as the 1938 Buffalo as well as the new Jefferson nickel were minted. Lets see some hot 5 cent coins......post them :thumb:

001.jpg 002.jpg 003.jpg 004.jpg From the fun show copies of the award winning Jefferson nickel design before the design change was made . Fleix Schlag Original design was that of an art deco design changed by the US Treasury Only1938 of both matte and proof finishes were produced in silver

Ya know, if they'd gone with that design, I wouldn't be nearly so grumpy about the shift to dead Presidents and buildings. Still not as nice as the Buffalo design, but a lot less dull than what we ended up with. If I wanted to see portraiture and face-on buildings, I'd look at greenbacks.

Then again, maybe it's just the novelty. I really, really love patterns...
