We can't even get rid of paper dollars..........there are too many skinflints, who want exact change, to get rid of the cent (penny).
Nooooooooooooo, don't get rid of the paper dollar! Canada doesn't have a paper dollar and slipping a $5 all night long will have you broke, FAST! Lol
Yes it does. Penny is a term used worldwide to mean a small coin, usually the smallest minted in the country. In the local currency it has had many names but only Britain actually calls it a penny. Germany called it a pfennig, for example. Many countries called it a cent or a variation of that.
(Penny/cent argument) Just saying that I toured the mint in Philadelphia and Saw penny used many times.
You don't need to go to the mint: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-D-Linc...077291?hash=item237c96416b:g:QPoAAOSwnHZYjQei
Don't stop with the cent. There is no reason for nickels either. Changing sales tax break points would meet popular disapproval but charging merchants a percentage of their total sales and eliminating the myth that $9.98 is a bargain compared to $10 would soon disappear. What coin is not equivalent in purchasing power with the 1857 cent? Maybe we don't need dimes either but lets not get carried away.
As history has repeatedly shown, token money always is inflated out of existence. The only variable is the length of time it takes individual governments to recognize the fact.
-- has not disappeared in countries where cash totals are rounded up or down to x.y0 or x.y5. Many price tags still use such "threshold" amounts; after all, those are the prices that the customer actually pays for the single items. Here in the euro area, Italy may be the next country to do away with the 1 (and 2) ct coins. Then again, every time John Oliver visits the country where he is from, he may well run into 1 penny and (incredibly large ) 2 pence coins. Christian
