Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor 1640 - 1705. The 3 Kreuzer was apparently a "minor," but frequently used, coin made of silver until 1760 when the composition changed to copper. Leopold had the longest reign of any Habsburg at just under 47 years, and, like all of the rest, fought many wars over succession and land holdings. His rather unflattering nickname of "Hogmouth" comes from a 1670 coin, but some don't believe that coin accurately depicted his features. Yet he did inherit the "Habsburg jaw." Apart from ruling, he also composed music. Many of his coins feature elaborate and highly detailed portraits for their time. Obverse lettering: "LEOPOLDUS D G R I S A (3) G H BO REX" Observe Translation: "Leopold, by the Grace of God, Emperor of the Romans always august, King of Germany, Hungary and Bohemia" Reverse lettering: "ARCHID AUS D (IA) BURG STYRIÆ" - the "(IA)" is the mint mark Reverse Translation: "Archidux Austriae Dux Burgundiae et Styriae" Diameter: about 20mm Composition: Silver 1.3g
