With your "Favorite" thread going on, what would you say is your "Least Favorite Coin" in your collection. I know it hard to say as we all bought our coins for one reason or another. My least favorite is this Crispina/Juno denarius. I got it for less than $40 several years ago. It is not rare but the type has a well known counterfeit. In hand, the coin is pretty ho-hum, kinda lifeless and the reverse is flat. The photo makes it look better too. It's better than many examples I have seen but I am always on the lookout for a replacement in a reasonable price. AR Denarius O: CRISPINA AVGVSTA,Draped bust right. R: IVNO, Juno standing facing, head left, holding scepter and patera; to left, peacock standing left. 2.74g 19mm Rome RIC 283 (Commodus), RSC 021 I will also add this Otacilia Severa Tetradrachm. It is just ugly, and in hand...a bit worse. But at the time I got it for below $30 and have yet to be willing to pay $100+ for another. Otacilia Severa (244 - 249 A.D.) Billon Tetradrachm SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch O: MAP ΩTAKIΛ CEOYHPAN CEB. Diademed and draped bust to right on crescent. R: ΔHMAPX EΞ OYCIAC YΠATO A, SC below, eagle on palm left, tail felt, wings spread, holding wreath in beak. Antioch Mint, 245 A.D. 11.34g 25mm McAlee 1088; Prieur 342
Any of the slugs and culls I have from my uncleaned days. Too many to photograph and all disappointing.
Man, that's two threads I find difficult, if not impossible, to answer. My favorite and least favorite coins of my collection. That's like asking me to pick my favorite and least favorite child. I can't do it!
I would say this Edward I class 1c penny ranks up there. At the time out was a place filler purchase, and I now have of them.
I think it's tied between these two: These are ugly coins to begin with, bit I think the nose mishap makes this one particularly ugly. But I did get it at auction for a good price as I guess no one else wanted it. ROMAN REPUBLIC. P. Servilius M.f. Rullus, 100 BC. AR Denarius. (3.90 gm). Helmeted bust of Minerva / Victory driving biga. Servilia.14. Cr.328/1. VF And then there is this one. I was pretty excited about it back in 2015 but now I think it's probably the ugliest Roman Denarius ever minted. Looks cartoonish. Not that I'll part with it, I won't, but it certainly doesn't get much love these days. M Scaurus denarius Not in the dame level as the first two, but I also dislike this one.... And also...you know what? It would be simpler to say that out of all my Roman coins, I think Republican era coins are generally uninteresting, boring and ugly. Give me a good 3rd Century imperial is what I say, particularly Galic Empire and Crisis Era coinage. Now those are interesting. Roman Republic coinage not so much, which is why I don't have that many of them. Just my opinion though....so don't crucify me. I'm sure my opinion here will probably not be too popular amongst this crowd.
Personally, this is an easy question to answer. Domitian as Caesar AR Quinarius (Broken), 1.04g Rome mint, 75 AD RIC V791 (C). BMC V158. RSC 634. Obv: CAES AVG F DOMI COS III; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTI; Victory std. l., with wreath and palm Acquired from GB Collection, June 2016 Received as a freebie with another coin, so I can't complain.
My least favourate that isn't in my collection anymore was a republican As I bought from an auction on eBay a few years ago. I paid a total of $31 USD , but then In the the next few days I found out that the bid I had already made on another As was also successful. So then two coins were on the way.... the 2nd (better ) coin arrived first . Then a few days later the bad coin arrived, I immediately put it back up for sale on eBay the same day it arrived with a $0.99 starting bid so I would never have to look at it again lol..... Surprisingly it ended up selling for about $45 so I made a little bit of profit... Here is the coin that I kept which cost $10-$15 more than the bad coin. ( I guess i could do improve on this coin too though.. ) (No pics of the other coin due to the Damnatio Memoraa. but it had a bad patina with metal showing through, poor surfaces and a misshapen flan.)
Man, I keep seeing a bunch of cool coins..I thought this was going to be a turd parade! There are a few I wont even take a pic of , but allow me stink things up a bit...
Minerva looks like she has a cold, which is a weird look for a god. Or at least like she needs to blow her nose.
Great topic and definitely a tough question. I'm going to have to post my Trajan palm tree coin. I think the coin type is spectacular but I don't like the fact that it has been tampered with. I'm planning to keep it however, and although I considered freeing it from the slab and washing it in acetone, I decided against it. I most likely would be less happy with the result than I am with the re-patination. Actually, it was this coin that had a major effect on breaking my slabbing habit. I was very happy with it before I sent it for the slabbing treatment and I'm appreciative for the honesty of the TP experts but I should have allowed it to remain free from the beginning.
Mine is easy,. This was one of the first RR coins I bought and I was just happy to add the type to my collection. As time has gone on, it's basically become the most worn of all the common denarii in my collection and at least to me it sticks out as a coin badly in need of an upgrade: C. Serveilius M.f. C.n.. 136 B.C. AR denarius (21.2 mm, 3.86 g, 7 h). Rome. ROMA, Helmeted head of Roma right, wreath and monogram behind head / C·SERVEILI·M·F, the Dioscuri galloping in opposite directions. Crawford 239/1; Sydenham 525; RSC Servilia I; Russo RBW 984.
I like this coin as well. The coloring is great. Let me make this as plain as I can. If anyone of you want to get rid of these least favorite coins, I will entertain taking them off your hands. Just contact me via private conversation.
I honestly don't remember writing the post. I'd hate to excuse drink on my behavior, but I was having a shill time and may have drank a little too much vodka. The only thing I can think of is that I was trying to be humorous, and it probably sounded great in my slightly inebriated state, but it obviously wasn't witty at all. Its rather embarrassing now, but I'll let it stand as I hate rewriting the past.
And if Bing passes, would love to review them also. I am looking for placemarkers in History and of course, I am a Roman Republic fan too. I cannot complain about this one as it was given to me when I purchased another coin. It is in tough shape as it has no reverse (rubbed off, ground off, something removed it completely). RI Augustus Quinarius - possibly Asia Recepta - blank wore-off-rev ADDED: I really do NOT have ANY bad coins, as I am not a Numismatist, rather I collect HISTORICALLY. My coins are placemarkers in history! The above coin is an oddity with a completely smoothed reverse...
This is a great idea for a thread @Mat, but I have no idea how to answer it. There are coins I'd like to upgrade, but generally there are all in my collection for a reason and on some level they speak to me.
