i'm getting interested in thalers, more specifically those of Scandinavian origin. can some one give me a primer on these or point me to a decent book that will learn me right?

I think the book is called European Crown's and Thalers by Davenport.

There must be 20 - 30 books by Davenport on thalers, and to cover the subject you need them all because of the way he broke them up. I only have half a daozen or so myself. Yes, Davenport is considered to be the definitive referrence, but I think you would be much better served with another book. World Dollars 1477-1877 Pictorial Guide/I] by Bachtell. There are 3 editions, 1974, 1975 & 1980. I have them all and prefer the '75 edition the best.

Scandanavia called its crown sized coins Dalers (although it manafactured some massive ones out of copper as well as silver in the 17th and 18th centuries). They are actually much harder to find than the catalogue prices suggest, and one would probably have to go for the for lots of types, as the full daler is an exspensive coin in VF or XF. The modern peices from the 19th and 20th century are obviously going to be more common.
