Latvia become an independent state jn 18 November 1918. It is very small Baltic country, has an area 43601 sq.km & population about 2600000. During the 1940-1991 Latvia was a part of the Soviet Union (as the Soviet Republic).
Now Latvia - is rather poor, but independent state.

The Latvian Maiden design is great. Also, I find it interesting that key elements of the 1 santims and 2 santimi designs from 1937-39 reappeared, more than ten years later, on the very first coins from my country (Federal Republic of Germany). Latvia 5 Lati Coin

I just upgraded the 5 Lati in my collection.

Date: 1931
Denomination: 5 Lati
Mintage: 2,000,000
Dimension: 37 mm
Material: 25 grams of .8350 Silver
Lettered edge: DIEVS *** SVETI *** LATVOJU ***

 

An attractive design. And the elements you see on that coin will also be used for the Latvian euro coins: Latvia aims at joining the currency union in January, and the Great Coat of Arms will be on the 10, 20 and 50 ct pieces while the Latvian Maiden will be depicted on the €1 and €2 coins.

We're all here to learn and "teach", to show off , help and have fun, right? As for the coin designs, they are shown here for example; pick a denomination on the left. Of course the future Latvian maiden circulation coins will, unlike your coin, not be silver ...

Thanks Eugene, Chris from Germany let me know yesterday. Its my only Lat/Lith coin. I just bought it for the knight and silver a few years ago.
