Steve, that is a very nice lot of British Commonwealth coins you have bought.British West African coins are NOT easy to find, especially the silver 3d.,6d.,1/-,& 2/- coins. The East African coin series is a lot easier to collect.

Now this is the one that I would like some advice on it weighs in at some .3g less than a 1835 Silver Rupee should and it certainly dont look like Silver but the workmanship on it is super :thumb:

I shall let you all be the judges let me know what you think of it?

    Nice lot of coins.

    Steve,that coin from Guernsey is a 1 Double,which is a Farthing-sized coin.The 8 Doubles is the size of a British 1d. coin.

I see that you have expressed pre-decimal coins as '1/10p' ,'1p','3p',etc.This is incorrect. It is the letter 'd.' that is used as the expression for the pre-decimal Penny. The letter 'p.' is for the expression of the decimal Penny.

By the way, nice lot of coins.

    Aidan.

Quite correct Aiden but I am to lazy to alter it LOL (as I said in another post having one of those days :stooge: ) talking of which I have just bought some Australian pennies and a small collection of about 30 mixed comonwealth so hope I might find somethig nice in them :smile Do you have any Ideas on the 1835 1 Rupee?

It could be an old fake in plumbum, could have been also silver plated, and intended for circulation. I have a similar one of this period.

    Indian 1835 silver 1 Rupee.

Steve,I think that it is a genuine coin, even though it is black from being in circulation for many years. As to the weight factor,it must be remembered that the planchets were punched out on a steam press. There was a bit of leeway allowed.I reckon that .3g difference in weight is nothing.

    That Cypriot coin dated 1955 is a 5 Mils (5/1000 Pound),not 5 Cents.Between 1955 & 1982,there was 1,000 Mils in a Pound.Prior to this,the Cypriot Pound was divided into 20/- of 180 Piastres - 45 Piastres = 5/-.Since 1983,there are 100 Cents in a Cypriot Pound,just like in Malta.The 1956 5 Mils & the 1957 100 Mils are very difficult to find.I managed to find a 1956 5 Mils by accident in a bulk lot of coins.Although it has some white stuff on it,it is the only 1956 5 Mils I have seen.The 3 Mils,25,50,& the 1955 100 Mils always turn up.
