I went to a pretty big show in Colo. Springs on Sat. Spent about what I did at my last show ($65), but I got some great stuff for the money: - 1781 massive 5 kopek piece, Catherine the Great, VF. $18. - 166_ AR Polish groschen, F. $20. - A great-looking example of "Celtic ring money," nice patina. $6. - Gold "1865" Maxmillian token of Mexico, BU. Doing research on this one. $5. - 1917 Japanese AR 10 sen, AU. $4. - 1906 Mexican AR 10 centavos, AU. $6. - 1943 Mexican AR one-peso, BU. $6. Didn't pick up much of what was on my "list" for the show (mostly Jefferson, Sac, and Prez proofs), but who cares. I love finding things I'd never thought I'd run across. Comments, questions? :kewl:
Don't know much about foreign coins, so excuse me if this question is dumb. Was the 1 Peso a gold coin? Living so close to Mexico I find Pesos in change all the time. I've heard people say they've found gold Peso's in change, but I've yet to find any. Guy~
It's a silver coin about the size of a U.S. half dollar, maybe a little bigger. This one is .720 fine silver. The smallest gold coins Mexico has made are the 2 1/2 peso coins. You can buy a restrike for around $40 bucks (basically it's a bullion coin). The gold token I bought is small enough to be the size of a "1 peso" coin if they ever decided to mint one, less than a third the size of that 2 1/2 peso coin.
