what was your last US coin purchase? I just bought from an LCS a 1922 Grant half commem. I love the reverse design detail. It's been on my want list for a while. It has a spot but the rest looks okay.
My last coin purchase of 2016 won't arrive until next year - it's on layaway - so you'll have to suffer. You'll suffer even more once I get the last numismatic arrival (today) of 2016 up and running ( ): It's a Z-axis stage, used for minute incremental vertical adjustment. The problem with bringing significant magnification into coin photography is that depth of field becomes almost nonexistent, and you have to take a succession of images with the focus point ever-so-slightly adjusted each time, and then combine them in software in a process called focus stacking or Z-stacking. The software understands which part of each image is in sharp focus, and discards all the unfocused information while assembling the "good" stuff into one cohesive image. If you've followed some of the work @rmpsrpms has posted here, you've seen it in action. It's how he can make a mint mark fill the screen in sharp focus. To give you an idea of the vertical adjustment involved, the dial is calibrated in microns....
That's pretty neat for minute adjustments. I took the above photos on my iPhone but I would normally use a 50mm with Nikon Closeup attachments to get macro type imaging for handheld. Otherwise I would use a Bellows. I haven't really used my equipment for coin photos but redid some of my coin inventory photos yesterday using the 50+closeups as I was testing a camera out.
Got this from a forum member. Planning on sending it to LVA as belated Xmas gift from all of us VAMmers with a dry joke about befriending himself. Bet he'll get a kick out of it
Here's my last coin purchase of 2016. Actually I got a Daniel Carr yesterday but I don't want to start a riot.
Bit of an impulse purchase but ended up being my last coin of 2016... assuming I don't get any for Christmas!
Sorry, no pic but, 1938-S PCGS MS64 quarter is probably it for the year. My wife has given up on trying to buy coins for me.
I'm attracted to them being a native Texan. But I also think they are one of the best designs in US coinage.
I am looking to collect a set of Texas commens but in a slow, casual manner. IMO it is one of the best commem half designs, up there with the Oregon and the Bay Bridge.
I lied AGAIN. I bought a 20cent piece - the only coin denomination that I'm missing. and picked up from the US Mint the (a) Limited Edition Silver Proof S set, and (b) Congratulations Set 2016 as my FINAL 2016 purchase congratulations. hobby budget totally blown now - well it was blown before .. but .. !! Luckily it "resets" on the 1st
