As i await my new drachm of Rhodes....just thought i'd post another facing head coin. This is my Larissa drachm. I bought this one last year. The strike isnt the best (horse is missing some of its head) but the amount of detail in this little coin is amazing! As soon as ny envelopes arrive, this one will be "freed". Hope you enjoy looking at her as much as i do!
The metal looks excellent and the obverse centering is off in a way that does not hurt the coin. The reverse centering is all that keeps this from being a gem.
My thoughts exactly! I really love the detail on the coin though. The obverse is especially appealing, as there is only a touch of flatness on the nose and chin. I really like the depth of the portrait, and the horse (or what is left if him) really displays good musculature and details...right down to the hairs on the horses tail! Add to this a nice, rich cabinet tone to boot!
I agree. The portrait is lovely and the lack of centering doesn't impact it. The reverse suffers from the lack of centering that occurs on so many of these. If this had a well centered horse it would be VERY expensive. I like it a lot as it is. A gem.
My only Larissa coins are the less impressive non-facing bust output. Thessaly, Larissa, Drachm Obv:– Youth wrestling or restraining bull, both to right, cloak and petasos flying out behind. Rev:– LAR/ISAI, bridled horse galloping right, all in incuse square Minted in Thessaly, Larissa from 440-400 B.C. Reference:– SNG Oxford - (vgl. 3865). SNG Cop. -.
Some very nice coins here! Sadly I have nothing to share. The youth wrestling bull is really nice and I like how you can see the musculature of the wrestler.
My other one has a better wrestler but less horse..... Thessaly, Larissa, Drachm Obv:– Youth wrestling or restraining bull, both to left. Rev:– LARI/SAIA, bridled horse galloping right, rein trailing, all in incuse square Minted in Thessaly, Larissa from .c. 440-400 B.C. Ref:– SNG Cop 110. SGCV I 2111 6.022g, 20.0mm, 270 degrees
Lovely coins - this caught my eye at a show 7 years ago - poor Larissa tends to end up with a boxer's nose from wear
THESSALY, LARISSA AR Trihemiobol OBVERSE: Head of the nymph Larissa right, wearing pendant earring REVERSE: ΛAPI above, ΠΛE in exergue, horse right, about to roll Struck at Larissa 370-360 BC 1.4g, 12mm BCD Thessaly II 274; Hoover, Volume 4 under "trihemiobols (c. 1.5g)" on page 146, number 474. R2 = Very Rare...3-24 extant examples
Shown this Larissa drachma already a couple of times, but since its the same coin as the OP coin, here it is again. Nice herd of Thessalian horses sofar !
Coins from Larissa is one of my favorite collecting themes (such great artistry on their coins!). Here's my latest Larissa acquisition, which I just finished photographing and cataloging. I know @stevex6 displayed one of these last year, I went green with envy, and I have been searching diligently for one ever since Thessaly, Larissa 370-360 BC AR trihemiobol 1.02gm - 13 mm Obv: Ox hoof on circular shield. Rev: Bearded head of Asklepios right, erect serpent before Ex Ross; Ex BCD Collection. Reference: CD Thessaly I1, 169; Weber 2844.
Wow, gang ... those are fantastic coins!! (congrats) => bring-on my sweet Thessaly Larissa examples ...
Both are very nice coins. The scene on the obverse....its like an action theme that has come down through the ages...like you can actually picture this going down in realtime..all those ages ago! Very impressive
