LARGER "ATES" ON REVERSE

Maybe it's me, but doesn't the " ATES" in "STATES" on the reverse appear to
be larger for some reason?

Larger than what? There are trillions of Zincolns in circulation.

Hi Joe, I know what you are asking about, the "ates" on alot of cents are kinda mushed flat. I'm not sure why, maybe something to do with the way they come out of the coin press or something. but anyways they look larger to me because they are fatter. especially at the bottom of the letters. sometimes this effect goes over to the "OF" and also "PLURIBUS". Take a horizontal look too.

Most of us call them Zincolns, because they are made of Zinc and copper plated since 1982 ½.

 

It was most likely caused by either worn dies or improper die alignment.
