What a find and I have to agree with you it made me want to scream at the monitor. Now I am sure that Doug reported misslaying his pocket money around that time :kewl:

They look to be in mint condition or pretty close. Someone's stash who never got back to claim it. That seemed to have happened a lot. Some of these hordes I see are nicely packed in jars and sealed at the top...like someone took their time. Others are like this one, just laying in a hole. I guess they say these might have been stashed in the wall of an ancient building...so this was probably someone's stash at home....but most are found in the ground.

Some of the many hordes that are found around roman settlements, they might be the stashes of soldiers and others in the towns that crop up around Roman military camps. They go out to bury their money, they know where it is...but they never get back. They go to fight the Germans or Persians, lay their stuff in an out of the way place, safe... and never make it back. The camp gets over run and they are forced to flee and everyone's money stays behind.

All over Europe, the middle east, Britain, north Africa...there were Roman camps with numbers in the thousands, settlements, battles, etc...all of these people in the habit of stashing money. I bet we have only just begun to find them all.

I love the clinking sound the gold coins make when she is handling them in the video.

Coins looked in great shape from what I can see , being an archeologist she should know better than to treat them that casually .

An archeologist and a numismatist are worlds apart. In her eyes, she was doing no harm.
