Hello Everyone, this is my first post. My daughter and I just started CRH this last week and our focus has been on Pennies to start and we are having a blast! My question is how do I tell if a date is large or small? I found this one last night and so far it's my best find. We are so very new to this, I'm sure we'll be sticking around with plenty of questions. Thanks for your time! -Heather
Yours looks like a large date. Great repunched mintmark too. Here is a link to determine the difference betwen large and small dates http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1960smalldate.html
The repunched mintmark appears to be RPM-001 as well. Another link for that http://www.coppercoins.com/diesearch.php Also welcome to the forum
First, welcome to the neighborhood, ladies! Yeah, I think the RPM is more important than the large date. Is it the RPM1? http://www.lincolncentresource.com/images/1960rpm1.JPG Chris
Ok how's this for a newbie question: What is RPM1 mean? I understand it's a reprint of the mint mark but what are the numbers noting? And due to the condition of the coin does it still have value? Thanks again for your time! -Heather
RPM stands for repunched mintmark. It is the first RPM variety listed for this coin so it is RPM-001. According to the link i posted in this condition it is worht a few bucks maybe more. It is definitely a keeper
Until 1990 or so, the Mint would hand-punch the mintmark into the dies. Sometimes, the placement of the mintmark was not to their liking, and they would re-punch it. The RPM's are numbered because the position could vary - north, south, east, west, northeast, etc. Below is an example of an RPM (East) on a Buffalo nickel. Chris
