I've got Newcomb's book (at least a reprint) but it only goes back to 1816. And Grellman's book is 1840-1857. I've got 3 older large cents and no reference. You were nice enough to ID my Chain AMERICA (S-3) and my Flowing Hair/Wreath has the variety on the slab label (S-11c) Here's the three I can't do (larger images available if necessary): 1794 Liberty Cap 1798 Draped Bust 1814 Classic Head/Cross 4
I cannot answer the variety question as I do not specialize in them, but WOW, I love all 3 coins. I do see I believe on the 94, the head of 94 with the hooked lowest curl. The 98 might be the reverse of 97. It looks like 16 leaves on left and 19 leaves on the right.
I attributed these without my reference books so I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm wrong. Your coins are beautiful and thank you for sharing.
All nice coins! Interesting choice of background color. Dansco tan? There was someone I shot some pictures for at the CSNS show of some high-grade early US copper. He suggested a red background, which I knew wouldn't be best, so I showed a few reds and also suggested and showed samples of what I approximated to be "Dansco tan" (R: 208, G: 176, B: 144) and "Penny Whimsey green" (the color of the binding of the 1970s printing that I have - R: 176, G: 208, B: 176), both of which I liked. He opted for the Penny Whimsey green. I'll have to shoot the actual binding sometime so that the canvas texture is included. Large cents shown with a black drop shadow or outer glow on that background would be pretty cool.
You are correct, the attributions are pretty straight forward on these. The die crack through the second S on the 94 pretty much nails it, the die cut from the ribbon to the A on the 1798 narrows it down to 182, 183, and 184, the die chips by the 7 nails it as 184. The leaf point extending past the second S in States nails the S-294.
Thanks for the confirmation. I'm still trying to learn and helping others with their large cents on this forum. Now if I can succeed at attributing all my 1800 varieties I would be a happy camper. The majority of them give me a headache.
