This is NOT a high confidence item, but I list it as an item of interest. It is easily identified as reverse C which would normally narrow it down to S-2, S-3 or S-4. However; there is another possibility. 1793 NC-1. I bring this up because the position of the R and it's position relative to the Y on the obverse MAY indicate the rarest of the chains. S-4 is very close spacing and this does not appear to be so. The S-3 has a High R which is rather distinctive and this does not appear to be the case on this coin. Now the differences between the NC-1 and S-2 are easy on an even AG coin, but what little there is to work with, we're left with the difference in spacing from the E to the R and it looks closer to the NC-1 to me. But the poor photo and condition of the coin make this a very big speculative reach. http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-Large-Ce...101&pid=100033&prg=1011&rk=1&sd=380550281075&
I'm also seeing an NC-1. I was just going through my Sheldon book and think it's not the S-2 because the spacing between the E and R is slightly off compared to the NC. You're right though, more devices to work with would have made it easier to attribute it. Nice find Marshall and thanks again for the tip.
Definitely not NC-1, On NC-1 the B is down very close to the top of the head. Can't be 4 because the LIBERTY is well too spread out. The R is not high so I would say not 3. That leaves S-2. If you look at his lightened photos LIBERTY and it's position is clearly visible. LIBERTY well away from the head and spread out with R low, that's S-2.
I should have bought the nice G chain I was offered in 1993 for $900. This might be the one US coin I may have to buy someday. I have been drooling over it since I was 7. What does a nice G, (preferable AMERI.) go for nowadays? $7k?
I'd definitely have to go with S2. I believe I have seen this coin before, I have been shopping low grade 1793 cents for a while and remember seeing one with the discoloration in the date area.
With your astonishing improvement in the pictures, I see that you're right of course. I never got it past the point of seeing three letters..ERT. Actually, now that I've gone back and looked again, I tried to work with the worst picture available rather than the best. Thanks for keeping a watch out.
I didn't do the picture manipulation, that image was in the body of the description. I just copied it from the auction.
