A coworker brought me these two large cents to ask my opinion on them. He said he wants to sell them and wanted twenty each for them. I told him I thought he was being a little optimistic expecting to get that for them but I told him I'd post them on here to get the real scoop and if perhaps they were some rare variety. I think the 1820 is an overdate (2 over 1) but it looks like it was a dug coin as it is very corroded. The 1846 I believe is a tall date? It also has some issues with the obverse. Any opinions and advise would be greatly appreciated.
The 1820 (looks like N1, large overdate, R1 rarity) is badly corroded, obviously. The 1846 tall date is pretty beat up with a rim ding and numerous newer scratches on the obverse. I wouldn't pay $20 for either. My guess is the 1820 might sell for that on ebay, given it is an early date and overdates are kinda cool. I don't think the 1846 would be bid that high. Lance.
If you like the coin, I like the 1820 at that price. Not a common coin to find in anything but mint state/AU (most/all are memebers of the Randall Hoard), and the overdate is cool too While it is heavily corroded and I don't particularly like it, it's you that really matters. I would pass on the 1846. You can do better on that date for $20 -- it's a common date.
I'd bet the 46 would go for more than the 20 just because the variety is painfully difficult to find, though not rare, at least on paper. I've seen G specimens go for $30 or more. I've been looking for a nice XF piece and get outbid at $250-300 every time I find one. Guy
Thanks for looking and opining everyone. My coworker had these loose, rattling around in his toolbox drawer. I think that's how the '46 got the fresh scratches. When I gave them back to him I put them in 2x2's and gave him a lecture about taking better care of our history.
