I was wondering if any of the early copper experts here could give me some help with this 1827 Coronet Large Cent. From everthing I have seen I think it is the N8 variety, but would like to get your opinions on grading. The white spots and line on the cheek on the obverse are from the scanner, not actually on the coin.

Definately looks like it's in the MS range with those bold details. The higher points on the obverse (Bust's hair) do show a small bit of wear along with the ribbon on the reverse. If the lustur is as muted as it looks to be by the scans, I'd give it an AU55-AU58. Those spots black across the surface on the reverse worry me (Corrosion?), but they may just be carbon spots. Some actual photographs would be helpful- Scans make grading more difficult.

WOW!! That is one nice coin!

I do see a bit of what appears to be rub on the high spots but whether it is wear or not I cannot say. At a minimum the coin would grade AU-58 but I suspect it could go MS-63 or higher. Too bad about that hit on Liberty's cheek.

I see a beautiful MS64 cent. Very nice.

I'll try and get some photos, it's just hard for me to get the lighting right when I try to get to photograph coins! Thanks for the advice so far!

Hobo - the hit on the cheek was from the scanner. I would say AU55/58, just not sure about the color from the scanner. Nice coin.

Yes, that is correct. The white spots and line are from the scanner and those dark splotches on her cheek were just smudges. I will try to get photos that will look more like the coin actually looks.

Nice detail. I would grade her AU58. Not a fan of the splotchy color on both sides. Maybe camera images would change my mind.

Looks in the AU range but fear the coloring will get it bagged for enviormental damge or questional color.

What is going on with the "U" in "UNITED"? Seems hardly visible?

Very nice coin, and it's conditional census in that grade for the variety.

I know! I'm thinking there must have been something in the die when it was struck, because there is definitely no wear in the area around it. Does that sound possible or does anybody else have an idea?

I'm thinking Au-55, I do also agree that it has quesionable color.

Thanks! And I saw that an N8 variety went for $1000 in the EAC sale this May with this description:
    440. 1827 N-8 R3 EF45.

Lustrous chestnut brown with a patch of darker toning on the obverse. AU55 details with a small patch of light corrosion beneath the N in UNITED. This patch is very small and mostly green but also has some red and black. There are also a few tiny spots of dark carbon on each side. Very nice details and lustrous surfaces, with good eye appeal. Recorded in the Noyes census as AU55 net AU50 and tied for CC#6,
    Noyes #31667. M-LDS.

Sounds really similar to the one I have, with the darker toning in places and carbon spots. Do you think it would be worth sending it in to have it graded to get it (possibly) listed in the census? I know the EAC people don't really care about the TPG, they use their own grading standards anyway.

OK, here is the best I could do with actual photographs instead of scans. It is not quite this "bright" in real life (maybe in real bright sunlight) but this is closer to the color than the scans. Take a look at see if this helps any. Thanks!

gonna say AU 55. hard to say if theres just carbon spots or a bit of corrosion on the reverse and a little verdigris.
