Title says it all! Cracked a pcgs 1838 for my type set and put it in the dansco. Its as tight as a hotdog dropped in a bucket! Well, guess ill put it in a 2x2 and wont crack my braided hair cent. Im sure this problem has touched a few of you in the past, did you have a remedy? I figured i could wedge something in the excess space, but I havent thought of anything that would not be harmful to the coin. Any suggestions ladies and gentlemen?
I have used shims cut from mylar flips to take up slack in Capitol holders. I don't know how well that would work in an album though. I suppose there will always be a chance it might fall out?
You can cut strips of an old slide like the Dansco albums use. Make them a little less than the thickness of the page or coin. Put the coin in the album page and wrap the strips around the edge of the coin.
This is what i originally was going to do! Unfortunately I had already tossed it and the wife emptied the garbage already Edit: this is exactly what I will do! I dug through the archives and the deep dark parts of the safe and came up with some not so important slabbed coins I got in a transaction a while back on craigslist where I bought a guys collection. These were included and I have 5 of them. I figure i will crack one of these and use its rubber holder! I will post on the outcome, hopefully I can cut a decent piece with a razor! These should actually be close to the original size!
That would be ideal also, I would just have to figure out where I could get some extra. I would rather not buy another album just for the slides, but if I run into them I will definitely try this also to test it!
But don't you wanna crack another coin though And maybe another idea is to use those black foam.rings from those capsules. You know the ones
Nice and crude! I slice a couple crescent moons out of the inner part of the rubber, as seen on the left of the rubber ring itself. I placed one into the slot first, propped it against the edge and fit the coin in by sliding it into the rubber piece first and then pushing the bottom of the coin in. I place the other piece in the braided hair cents spot so I can crack that one next! It is wedged firmly in its position now and even if I dropped the book, I dont think it will jar it loose. Thanks guys for the ideas! Hopefully the next guy who runs into this problem has an answer for it immediately now!
I have to use a very sharp pen knife to take away some of the inside of the hole to make these fit as I go along. I have found the large cents to be the only type of problem like this associated with albums due to the slight variance of these coins diameters. Some will fit, some will not. If done carefully enough you will not trash the looks of the album.
Unfortunately, my problem was the opposite, the hole was too large. May I ask which album you were using that the holes were undersized? I think I would rather have it that way!
Well maybe you could save yourself the headache! I like the idea of being able to open the holes further if needed, im sure it looks alot cleaner then my current setup above!
A much better method for cracking a slab open is just using a towel and hammer on concrete. Tap all for edges hard and it just splits in half clean. I used small bolt cutters forever which i thought was easy like butter until I finally broke down and tried the towel and hammer method. Haven't look back since!
My album is an older one so I probably will not upgrade anyways. I'm sure that after the album makers got enough complaints about how hard it was to insert the coins, they most likely made the holes slightly larger in a newer series to satisfy this problem, so I would probably run into the same problem you have now. But in the end they created a new problem with the coins bouncing around. I'd rather have then in there tight than bouncing off the slides creating surface issues on the coins.
This is exactly how I feel, no need to get anymore added wear from jiggling around in the hole. Thats why I said I rather would have had it the way your album is set up!
