Hello All, On another site I visit (for metal detecting), a thread posted shows a 1793 Liberty Cap cent found metal detecting in New York area. The guy is not sure of the attribution, so I wanted to get the expert opinions on it! After looking carefully at this coin... I'm pretty sure i've ruled out the S-12.... S-14, 15 and 16... along with the NC-6. I really believe this to be an S-13. What do you guys think?
Yes S-13. There are only two known reverse dies and this is the die used on 13, 14, NC-6, and S-16. The bisecting obv crack is not there so it isn't 14. Fortunately the beaded border is clearly visible which makes it easy to tell the other obverses apart. On NC-6 and S-16 there is a bead centered over the I, that isn't true here so those two are out. That leaves S-13. (And to prove it isn't an early uncracked S-14, the L almost touches the beads. On S-14 it is well away of the beads.)
Yep. What Conder said on the Obverse . The Dotted I on the Reverse is Sheldon's Reverse L while Reverse K has (N)I between dots. Let me know if he wants to convert it to cash. I'm partial to damaged coins with meat on them at the appropriate discount.
Thanks guys! Finally.. an attribution I got right! There's hope for me yet! I've contacted the gentleman who found this coin. He IS going to sell it, but wants to have it graded and preserved first.... Not sure if he thinks he can get more for it once it's been graded and such... I would imagine it will get a "Genuine, Environmental Damage" body tag to it... who knows. If he wants to sell it, I've asked him to contact me. I will forward your request onto him at that time!.
I cringe when I hear 'preserve' unless it's being done by the right professionals. It's so easy to do further damage when you think it's improving the appearance. Even NCS has varied success and they're probably the best available.
