From what little research I've done, it looks like this is a good find for me. It was hidden in an old chest I picked up at a sale from the kids of a deceased individual. He was a coin collector and had a lot of coins sold at the sale. Anyway, long story short, in a hidden compartment I found a few coins, including this one that says 1695 24 Marien Grosch on it. The problem is, it has some kind of laquer on it, as do several of the other coins in there. How can I remove this? Also, is this coin worth much? It has a little hole that looks like someone made a necklace out of it which is pretty sad. I'd like to get the laquer stuff off and sell this. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I figured this is the place to find information. Thanks in advance for any help.
It depends on the type of lacquer, Those coated before the 1950s are probably organic type and one can try alcohol or acetone and see if some comes off. If it does, then a soak in pure acetone , with changes of fluids for several hours is the best without physical cleaning with an artist bristle brush. If the acetone doesn't dent it, most likely is is a modern synthetic acrylic lacquer , and I have had no real success, although DMSO did remove some in one of my experiments. Find my thread here on DMSO. Jim
