Lamination question 1973 penny

    What causes this top layer to peel away like this?

    Looks like someone tried to plate the cent. It's not a lamination peel.

    If someone tried to plate the cent (not sure what that is) wouldn't the cent weigh more? This cent weighs less than a copper and more than a zinc.
