I read several interpretations about this subject but have come up with an inconclusive answer. Do you simply call it a lamination or delamination ERROR? I personally would rather see it called a Delamination Error. After all, the coin is Delaminated. Lamination Cracks (error-ref.com)
Either one lets me know what you are talking about. I do like using 'Retained' and 'Unretained' to describe which kind it is though.
How can a coin with laminations be delaminated? There would still be some laminations that haven't delaminated yet. Is delamination more exciting than lamination?
It is possible to have a coin with laminations and not know it, but once it starts to delaminate it can be easier to notice. I think a delamination is capable of generating more excitement.
I think" the experts" got it right to begin with....its an "lamination error " not a delamination....error......the error takes place durring manufacturing process of the medal ,not afterwards.
I think the term lamination just became acceptable in the numismatic world, even if the definition isn't correct. From @JCro57 (https://www.cointalk.com/threads/lamination-vs-delamination.388057/) Delamination is the correct usage, grammatically speaking. However the industrial usage - despite being flat out wrong technically - is lamination. I only use "lamination" so people within the hobby know what I am referring to. I make a similar case between the terms "altered" and "counterfeit."
Also: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=136679 Thank you for contacting PCGS customer service. Lamination is when part of the planchet is flaking, but it's still attached. Delamination is when it becomes detached. However, we usually use the term "detached lamination" instead of "delamination" when describing these errors. These coins are considered mint error and will need to go under a mint error service. Please let me know if I can further assist you.
