I recently purchased three 1943-D Jefferson war nickels, one in PCGS 65 and two in 66. The 65 has significant areas of cracking on the reverse, above and around the building. What do I have here? My research came up with laminator error/cracks, but seeing as I've never had a coin with this feature, I figured I'd consult the folks here. As a bonus, all three of the coins had an interesting 'scarface' type of die crack running through Jefferson's cheek: Thank you for any input.
Yes, the reverse shows a lamination error. It is extremely common on war nickels, as they were struggling with the alloy. And yes, the obverse shows a die crack across his cheek. Both of these are quite common and have no extra value, but they are cool.
That clears up a question I have had for some time. I have three War nickels with various lamination issues and seem to see them quite commonly. I appreciate that, Jason.
If you're interested, Roger Burdette wrote a fascinating book about all the troubles they had coming up with the war issues: https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/un...LYaVUAtIXms5H9l_4PGjViZYffo0bGAhoCbsoQAvD_BwE
