Just picked up this heavily toned 1917 type 1 S.L.Q. in an older Anacs soap box holder. Although the toning is dark & heavy, the coin is very lustrous and seems to be super original. All in all, I am pleased with it and thought I would share. Anybody want to guess what the grade might be????

Sal, I think that it's a lot better than VF, maybe even an AU?

I'd like to know where anyone's seeing wear on that coin, because I'm sure not seeing it on the shield, knee, head, or eagle. I won't hazard a guess on grade, though; I can't see past the freckled toning to look for hits.

AU? Really? Maybe XF at best. Look at the reverse again. Yeah, the obverse is maybe AU, but the reverse isn't in my opinion. I guess this is why I'm Not a grader and still a broke man.:(

jeffb has a good point I can't really see any wear through the freckled toning (good description btw)
That being the case I would probably call it high AU

Then again I "settled" for a UNC-details (cleaned) myself :D

…Seems to have evidence of light wear on the obverse in the very center, unless it is a trick of the light, and on the leading edge of the central wing and to the right of that spot too, on the reverse.

My guess is AU58, but if you hung a big weight on eye appeal I would have to go AU55…imo…Spark

    AU58 at minimum.
As mentioned by others, looking past the toning I'm hard pressed to find any circulation wear.

Great looking coin. Definitely looks mint state. Although marks might be hiding beneath the toning, I'll say MS64.

And if you think Lady Liberty is a dirty girl you haven’t seen my potty dollar. I’d get banned if I posted it but I’ve never seen a coin quite like it. And yes she is a nasty fun loving girl.

She cleaned up her act after the first year. She even covered her mammaries.

OK, I guess it's time to reveal the grade: toughCOINS is the winner! -MS64FH-
I honestly wonder if this coin might be worth sending in to PCGS to get evauluated for possible restoration. My concern is they won't want to mess with it since the toning is so heavy. When you hold the coin in hand it has a lot of luster under there and there are hardly any hits or wear on it. I feel like this coin might go up in grade if lady liberty could clean up her act a little bit! :) I wish I could keep just SOME of the toning! :)

I really like it a real lot. The toning is even. There's a touch of color accent on the obverse but not enough to disrupt the graceful eye-movement through it. I've seen coins at this stage of toning with luster just about off the charts and if that's what you're describing I'd just let her be, let her do her thing.

I'm in the restoration camp. I'm afraid if we let the toning go much further it will become terminal. Just my .02. Beautiful Stander by the way!
