Lack of luster on devices

I have several Morgans, all seemingly MS+ in terms of 'lack of wear', but a few have no "frost" on the devices, when compared side-by-side to others. Is this possibly natural or evidence of cleaning? No hairlines or swirls are present on the fields. The worst offender actually has DMPL fields! (I bow to the expertise of the forum!)

Yes, you can have Morgans without frosty devices, but they are unusual. Downright unheard of with some date/mint combinations. Depending on your coins, I would suspect that some of them are likely whizzed and or polished.

Post pics - that makes it a lot easier.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but dipping can cause what you describe. The second picture you have posted definitely looks like the coin could have been dipped.

In my early collecting days I made the mistake of buying a couple Morgans which appeared to be uncirculated but were actually higher grade AU's that had been dipped.

I'm no expert on luster, but it looks as if it were dipped which took away its luster. But not entirely sure. ;)

A close look at the hair "above the ear" would indicate wear or a lousy strike, so chances are this is an AU coin. The P-mint coins were generally well struck, so there goes that theory!

This coin looks more then just dipped, it looks polished to death. It was prob a really nice Au that was polished up to make it look new... I see em like this all the time.

It went back to the Fleabay seller yesterday, no questions asked!
