I'm trying to make a set or two (or 3 or 4!) of modern S. Korean coins (1959-present) in UNC to Mint State condition. I'm mostly interested in pre-1983 S. Korean coins. I am currently looking for some good UNC 50 Won coins, 1972-1982 (KM 20). Anybody have any good leads?
Here's my collection: http://www.gxseries.com/numis/koreatype/koreatype_modern.htm Some of the 60s to early 70s coins are extremely expensive in UNC condition. Unfortunately I don't think there is any good bargain on that one. The 1972 50 won in UNC alone rarely goes under 100USD as far as I can see. 1977 50 won can be quite expensive due to the low mintage and I haven't bothered looking for a better condition due to absurd prices. Other coins such as the 60s 10 won and 5 won coins can be really expensive as well. You can see examples of such prices on ebay. Welcome to cointalk by the way.
Here are some examples on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130279296788 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370129903806 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230317097770 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350147600618 Trying to make a few sets will definitely set you a fair bit there!
Hey, thanks for the links. Yes, I've seen these coins at e-bay. I only purchase common, inexpensive stuff from ebay. I have MUCH better luck at coinshows. For example, I recently bought an entire sheet consisting of eight 100 Won (1970, 71), four 5 Won (1969), and three 1 Won (1967) and one 10 Won (1970) coins ALL in Uncirculated or BU for $25.00. Here's a link to my collection so far: http:www.geocities.com/mlovmo/collection.html
mlov43, yes you are probably a lot better off buying from coin shows where dealers are not too updated on the real prices. I have seen a few ebay sellers buying them off from sellers using outdated Krause prices. I saw your homepage and they look really good. Good luck!
Hey, gxseries: Take a look at my collection now. A few SWEET updates to my coins!: www.geocities.com/mlovmo/collection.html
Very nice, most of the earlier Korean coins are really tough in UNC grade. The 1966 5 and 10 won as well as the 1972 50 won still command a high price on the market that I see. Congratulations!
