Hey cointalk, I have some S. Korean 1000 Won notes here, 4 in CU and two in VF. I have pictures of one of them, could anyone tell me what's it worth? All have identical designs. Are they a spender?
I think it's the older series, as now they are all blue and smaller in size. My grandpa gave me these as pocket money but because he knew I was a collector he gave me the older series. They were quite common back in the 90s, I believe.
I worked in the Osan AB area from 1986-1991 and went through quite a few of those notes. I got about 850 won to the dollar in 1986 and about 1200 won to the dollar in 1991. I have an Unc 100 note strap of those notes somewhere. The best thing about Korean money is that 100 won coins are the exact size and weight as US quarters...meaning, a 100 won coin costs about 12.5¢, but spends in US vending machines the same as 25¢. ...not that I ever did that. In 1986, five (5) of those notes would buy you one heck of a haircut!
so how what's its, collector's value? Anyways I'm not gonna spend them...4 of them are consecutive and I like the back design.
It's South Korean 1000 Won the exchange rate is 1000 won = 89 us cents. If you can find out the year I can find out a retail value. but most dealers probably won't pay but exchange rate for them. I saw one of that color in 1975 in unc retails for $5.
