    Hello wise experts!
I found many grooves on a coin forming a kind of halo around both sides of the coin, what is this called? is it considered a mistake? Cheers!

This is what happens when the die pair becomes deteriorated from overuse. Some folks call it “die fatigue”.

The Mint overuses dies and die pairs regularly, this is not a mistake…it is intentional…imo…Spark

Yes, they do everything they can to prolong the life of the die. With zinc cents it’s horrible what the coin can look like and they are okay with that.

Thanks for the explanation, when I see this again I will be able to know what has happened with this type of coins. Best regards

You’re welcome. I’ve never tried but you might want to log into the Internet and do a search on extending die life for you with Mint and Coins and see what comes up.

It would help many of us if you posted photos full image.

According to the mint, the average life of a cent die is 1 million coins.

And yet they try their best to get 2 million from that die.
