    Hello all,

Just have a quick question about a few 1964 coins I have from the Kingdom of Jordan (I have one complete set and another that is missing the 1 & 5 Fils.) Checking eBay active/completed auctions, I see that some are slabbed as MS and some as SP. Does anyone know the difference (just a "this TPG says it's this and the other TPG says it's this" thing?)

Here's how each coin shows up in Krause:

    1 Fil
    KM 8
Mintage of 3,000 pieces (Note: in sets only)

    5 Fils
    KM 9
Mintage of 3,000 pieces (Note: in sets only)

    10 Fils
    KM 10
    Mintage of 1,253,000

    20 Fils
    KM 13
Mintage of 3,000 (Note: in sets only)

    50 Fils
    KM 11
    Mintage of 1,003,000

    100 Fils
    KM 12
Mintage of 3,000 (Note: in sets only)

So it looks like there were 3,000 mint sets produced, and the 1, 5, 20, and 100 Fils ONLY appear in these sets. In the back of the Jordan section of my manual, it notes that 3,000 6-coin Mint Sets were produced (book value $2,850?) as well as 3,000 6-coin Specimen Sets (book value $22.50.)

So, how do you tell the difference? Will the Specimen Sets be proof-like in appearance?

Just trying to figure out what I have sitting on my desk and what they're worth.

@sonlarson - as a collector of world sets, maybe you know a bit more than I?

    Thanks!

(Here is an iPhone shot of my coins for fun - check out that PURPLE 10 Fils!)

Not sure what you have. My guess is the SP is for SPecimen. Krause, my only reference for these does not show a Mint set for 1964, only the Specimen set. I would speculate that is what you have. The only reference to 1964 in a mint set is MS2 which has mixed dates. KM5 in 1949, KM8 in 1963, KM9 in 1962. PN10-11 for 1964 and PN12 in 1962. The PN are pattern coins and are Gold. My guess that would be the $2,850 set.

A gold pattern set offers an easy explanation for the high value of that mint set in my Krause manual.

I'm just seeing graded coins from 1964 listed for pretty strong prices compared to what the Krause value shows. Yes, I know anyone can list anything for any price regardless of whether or not it's realistic, and yes, I know that book values are just that...book values (not directed at anyone in particular, just anyone who might think to lecture me on those two points like I'm a noob.)

Just trying to make sense of something haha...
